A Great Humanitarian and Champion of LGBTQ+ Rights and Aging Services

Openhouse board of directors, staff, and community members send our heartfelt condolences to Robert Holgate and the family and friends of philanthropist Alvin H. Baum Jr., who passed away at home last Sunday evening. Al and Robert are long-time friends of Openhouse, whose generosity helped make possible the building of our campus on Laguna Street. A great humanitarian and champion of LGBTQ+ rights and aging services, we will miss Al’s big-hearted leadership and voice. With his passing we have lost a pillar in our Openhouse community, and share in the sorrow and silence he leaves behind.

Thanks to his work preparing and supporting the next generation of leaders in the LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities, Al leaves behind a legacy that continues to uplift the lives and experiences at the intersection of sexuality, gender, and religion.

Al, we will continue the work in your memory.
