Long-Term Care Insurance – Why Now?

As we age, what if we need help getting out of bed, getting dressed, eating, or bathing?

It can come as an unpleasant surprise to learn that these conditions are not covered by medical insurance or even Medicare. They require what’s called “custodial care,” not “medical care.” And they can be very expensive – over $90,000 a year in San Francisco. (See complete article by Courtney)

One of the San Francisco Senior Centers, the Castro Senior Center provides a daily lunch program, activities for seniors, and trips. The director is making special efforts to reach out to LGBT seniors to both include them in the ongoing activities and also develop specific LGBT senior programs.

CUAV is a multicultural organization working to end violence against and within our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) communities. CUAV offers a 24-hour confidential, multilingual crisis line, free counseling, legal advocacy, and emergency assistance (hotel, food, and transportation) to survivors of hate and domestic violence. CUAV uses education as a violence prevention tool through our speakers’ bureau, youth program, and education and outreach program.

GAPA 35 plus: Social and conversational group for gay/bi API men 35 and over. Meets for dinner and discussion once a month in participants’ homes. Facilitated discussion includes topics such as health, retirement, coming out later in life, family, being gay/Asian/older, etc. Informal, safe environment, and we encourage people to participate at their own pace and comfort level. Membership is not required to participate.

Serving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elders age 60 and over, New Leaf Outreach to Elders (formerly Gay and Lesbian Outreach to Elders or GLOE) provides a range of senior social services promoting independent living and improving quality of life. The program offers information and referrals, support services, friendly visits for the homebound, educational and cultural activities, holiday events, group outings, and women’s and men’s social/recreational activities and groups. Outreach to Elders has a Geriatric Mental Health component that offers in-home, senior-specific counseling services and medication management.
